ELLIOTT WINS FOURTH IGA SENIOR MATCH PLAY, KAHLER CAPTURES SUPER SENIOR TITLE

SATURDAY, JUNE 1 - FINKBINE GC, IOWA CITY

Gene Elliott, Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member of West Des Moines, captured his fourth IGA Senior Match Play crown on Saturday.  He defeated Terry Cook of West Des Moines 3 & 2 in the championship match.

Elliott (pictured right) took command early in the final match by winning holes 2 thru 5 and then hole 7 to 5 up. After Cook won the 8th hole, Elliott won the 10th to go back to 5 up, which was plenty to withstand the run Cook made near the end by winning two out of three holes (12 & 14).  Ties at 15 and 16 secured the championship for Elliott.

Elliott advanced to the finals by defeated #1 seed Tony Newkirk of Pleasant Hill in the semifinals.  Elliott came out on top by a margin of 5 & 4.  Cook defeated Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Jon Brown of Adel in his semifinal match.  A birdie on the first extra hole propelled him into the championship match.

Steve Kahler (pictured below right) of Marion is the Super Senior bracket champion.  Kahler outsted Mark Hogenson of Cedar Rapids in the championship match 2 & 1.

Kahler took control early winning the first two holes.  He would make the turn 3 up in the match and would remain 3 up thru 12.  Hogenson then made his move, winning 14 and 15 to get within a hole.  Kahler slowed the momentum by halving the 16th hole, then won the 17th to take the match.

Matt Weresh (below left) of Clive earned the President's Bracket title by defeating Brian Persson of Elk Run Heights by a 4 & 3 margin.  Marty Goetz of Marion defeated Doug Bryant 6 & 5 to win the Vice President's bracket.

DECORATED FINAL FOUR AT IGA SENIOR MATCH PLAY

SATURDAY, JUNE 1 - FINKBINE GOLF COURSE -

The semifinals of the IGA Senior Match Play have been set, and it is a decorated final four.

Iowa Golf Hall of Fame members Gene Elliott and Jon Brown are both still alive.  Elliott will face #1 seed Tony Newkirk in the first semifinal while Brown takes on Terry Cook in the second match.  Cook has been one of the top Iowa players for years, securing multiple victories as a senior player. Newkirk tied Brian Verduyn for medalist honors after both shot even par 72 in the stroke play qualifying round.

Elliott is seeking his fourth Senior Match Play crown while Brown, Cook & Newkirk are trying to win their first.

In the President’s Bracket (qualifiers 17 thru 32), Joe Ward and Matt Weresh face off this morning while Brian Persson and Vern Boenish meet in the other match.

The Vice President’s Bracket (qualifiers 33 thru 44), Edwin Evans and Doug Bryant meet in match one.  Marty Goetz and Bob Hartzler square off in match two.

In the Super Senior bracket, #1 seed Steve Kahler will face Joel Yunek in one semifinal while Mark Hogenson squares off against Jim Butler in the other.  Hogenson dispatched of defending champion Rob Christensen in the quarterfinals, 2 & 1.

There were three Super Senior players that did not qualify for the 16 person championship bracket.  Tom Fetter came out on top of the small bracket to capture the Super Senior President's crown.

The Super Senior bracket was instituted for the first time in 2018.

Weather impacted the Senior Match Play, as it has for just about every golf tournament around the state this spring.  Due to heavy rains leading into the championship, the stroke play qualifying round was postponed 1/2 a day to let the golf course dry out.  To keep things on schedule, the IGA determined to make cuts to brackets of 16 rather than 32 to increase the chances of a finish by Saturday night.

On Saturday, updates thru 9 holes will be posted for the semifinal matches while the finals matches will be live scored hole by hole.
